The UNIVERSAL MONSTERVERSE will be horror movies

The Universal Monsterverse will not be The MCU with monsters after all.

Once upon a time, sites reported that Universal was planning a movie universe with their monsters. After the announcement we all thought the films were planned as action flicks and set in modern day. One of those things are right: the films are set in modern day, however they’re not entirely action movies. According with Alex Kurtzman, the announcement was lost in translation and the Universal Monsterverse will be conformed by horror movies.

I think there was some lost in translation quality to the way it was received, because I promise you there will be horror in these movies. It is our life goal to make a horror movie. The tricky part is actually how you combine horror with either adventure or suspense or action and be true to all the genres together. In some way, Mummy, dating all the way back to the Karloff movie, was the first to do that. It was the first to combine horror with — I wouldn’t say action, but certainly a lot of suspense. So it’s more about how you blend the different elements and stay true to each one, but there will definitely be horror in the monster movies…We will hopefully serve it up good and plenty.

Well, that’s releiving! Dracula Untold was originally going to kickstart (it shot a scene to fit the larger universe) this cinematic universe, but it suffered Green Lantern-itis and apparently everything will begin with The Mummy. Speaking of The Mummy, Devin Faraci (Birth.Movies.Death) claims he read a draft of the new adaption and it’s bad. According to Faraci “it is a horror to read.” Devin is a guy I trust and just hearing what he thinks about the new Mummy makes me uncomfortable. Is it really that bad?

I believe there’s no reason to make a Monsters Universe. Maybe mentioning characters or events of The Mummy in Dracula is a better idea than having all these characters together in the same picture. That idea sounds like The Avengers but with monsters… that sounds like some kind of SNL sketch to me.
