The actor shares info about his role in Civil War. Is he playing a character from the comics or an original?
With Captain America: Civil War working as some kind of Avengers 2.5 and introducing us to heroes such as Black Panther and the new Spider-Man played by Tom Holland, we often forget about other supporting characters in the movie. It was reported in early May that The Hobbit‘s Martin Freeman was joining the crew of Captain America: Civil War, the announcement was made, but details about Freeman’s character were shared.
Recently, the actor was interviewed by BadTaste, who asked him about his role in Marvel’s upcoming blockbuster, and he answered:
He works for the American government. He works in conjunction with the superheroes and certain agencies that help to tame the superheroes’ power, I suppose. So you’re not quite sure which side he’s on. It looks a little bit like he’s playing one game when actually he’s playing another. It’s the kind of character I like because it’s ambiguous and because you don’t know whether he’s good or bad. I like that area that isn’t black or white, I like the grays, because I think there’s just more fun to be had in not playing one obvious line.
What he described sounds like a good role so far: interesting and multidimensional. In his comments he added that his character’s accent is not British nor Minnesota-nice, in fact he will have an East Coast American accent. What the actor stated makes us think that he is not playing an original character created for the cinematic universe like Coulson, but he could play Everett Ross, an American Regent from Wakanda in the comic books. He is a normal human being, but he is an expert on Wakanda who later becomes an adviser to the State Department, S.H.I.E.L.D. and NSA on everything related to Wakanda.
It’s pretty much what I expect from him. The role seems to fit Martin Freeman. If this little theory is true we could not only see him on Civil War but also he could reprise his role in the Black Panther movie set to be released in 2018. Freeman could Everett Ross, but also I wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up playing some kind of Coulson-like character now that we have original characters coming out in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
