The rights to release a standalone Hulk movie are at Universal, the studio that previously released that 2008’s Incredible Hulk. The character can be in The Avengers and there’s the chance that he may appear in another movie. In a recent interview, Mark Ruffalo told Devin Faraci from Badass Digest:
As far as a Hulk movie, a standalone Hulk movie, Marvel doesn’t really have the rights to that yet. That’s still Universal’s property, so there’s that issue. That’s a big impediment to moving forward with that. Now I don’t think that’s insurmountable, by the way, but I don’t know where it’s going from here for me.
Universal still owns the rights to release the standalone Hulk movies, but remember how Marvel Studios was able to take Iron Man and Avengers out of Paramount. Disney can just make a deal with Universal to have a new Hulk movie, even if it’s not as easy as it sounds. Just remember how hard it was for Marvel Studios to close a deal with Sony to produce an standalone Spider-Man movie and to add this character in movies such as Captain America: Civil War or maybe even in one of the Infinity War films.
Light spoilers from Avengers: Age of Ultron below, you can pass and read other article here on Geek Broadside.
In early drafts for Age of Ultron had the Hulk rocketed into space, this is what triggered many rumors about a new Hulk standalone movie based on Planet Hulk. However in his last scenes that made the final cut in Avengers: Age of Ultron have Hulk inside a Quinjet, very high above Earth. Devin Faraci also heard that Marvel wants to put the character in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, but heard those plans are off the books. Who knows, maybe Hulk will join Starlord and his team for a movie,
Also, in a interview with IGN, Ruffalo said:
Well he’s going to space. Yeah, I mean there’s some talk of maybe Planet Hulk.
Now that we know that Planet Hulk, may not be possible while the character is with Universal, but having the big guy on Guardians of the Galaxy 2 can backdoor the idea for sure. James Gunn talks a lot of the work he is doing at Marvel and he spoke about which will be in the sequel and the ones who are not going to be present in the movie. Gunn never talked about adding Hulk into the mix, but maybe this is top secret and Hulk is in fact going to show in Guardians. Would you like to see the Hulk in Guardians of the Galaxy 2?
