Finally, some actual news about Independence Day 2 are coming out. First we got a bunch of rumors and Roland Emmerich’s desire to film to sequels back-to-back. Now it looks like the long awaited sequel found its lead.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jessie Usher will lead the film as the son of Will Smith’s character which debuted in the big screen in 1996. However, Captain Steven Hiller is not coming back in the film, at least played by Smith, since he passed the role last year.
Usher’s filmography is not extense, and I haven’t seen much of him. The actor worked in the last year’s football drama When the Game Stands Tall, the Starz original series Survivor’s Remorse, and the Cartoon Network series Level Up. From all the projects mentioned before, I’ve seen commercials of Level Up. I’m going to give this guy the benefit of the doubt and trust the casting director of the movie.
Before having confirmation of Jessie Usher joining the sequel, Michael B. Jordan (Chronicle, Fruitvale Station, Fantastic Four) was rumored to take over an important role in the movie.
Later today, director Roland Emmerich took his Twitter and Facebook to announced that Jeff Goldblum will be back. Also, Liam Hemsworth was added to the cast.
