Robert Downey Jr to co-star in Captain America 3

By: Marv Castillo

Yesterday Variety broke some big news. Robert Downey Jr will be present in Captain America 3. Remember that bunch of interviews he did that this site didn’t cover? There’s no plan for a fourth Iron Man movie. Wait, there’s is plan. Oh, wait, there’s no Iron Man 4 but he’s working in something insteresting with Marvel Studios. Downey Jr may not have a new Iron Man movie but he is basically co-starring in the third installment of the Captain America franchise, most likely called Civil War or Fallen Son. Speaking about titles, Marvel’s favorite title seems to be Fallen Son and this movie is probably going to face Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and set up one of the most beloved storylines in the Marvel Universe, Civil War.

According to Marc Graser,

The new pact is significant for the Marvel cinematic universe considering the plot will pit Stark against Captain America’s alter-ego Steve Rogers, played by Chris Evans, as they feud over the Superhero Registration Act, which forces anyone with superhuman abilities to reveal their identities to the U.S. government and agree to act as a police force for the authorities.

Stark supports the program, but Rogers does not, saying it threatens civil liberties, causing sides to be taken and Rogers, among others, to go on the run to avoid arrest. The moral question and battle with his Avengers teammate essentially makes Stark a villain of sorts in “Captain America 3,” providing Downey with a meaty role he could play out into future Marvel films, including a fourth “Avengers.”

Robert Downey Jr, in fact wasn’t in the movie for a little cameo but his role in the film wasn’t very big. The actor asked for a more substantial role, so he can do something else with the character and of course, bigger role means bigger paycheck. Because of this request, Marvel Entertainment chief Ike Perlmutter ordered the screenwriters to take Tony Stark entirely out of the script. However, Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Entertainment, continued talks and now Downey Jr is in final negotiations to star in Captain America 3 and Avengers 3.

Back in 2007 when I heard that they planning to an Avengers movie I said it was going to suck, how are they going to bring so many characters to the big screen? Well, I was wrong. It happened and it is one of my favorite movies. Now I trust in Marvel more than ever and the studio never stops surprising me. Everyone said that a Civil War adaptation wasn’t possible in any way, because of legal issues. Spider-Man is owned by Sony, Reed Richards and the rest of the Fantastic Four are in the hands of Fox. But it looks like we are getting Civil War, guys, just not the way is in the comics and I understand that.

Not everything has to follow the comic books, and this comes from someone who reads and loves comics. I know Marvel’s plans, I know what they want to do with this franchises and if you see it carefully, you’ll note that they’re not following the exact events and you don’t care about that right. The Infinity storyline is partially adapted but is not the exact same thing you read. What I want to see from Marvel Studios is what they are able to do with the characters they have. I want good stories, partially original. Surprises are good. I didn’t know what was going to happen in Guardians of the Galaxy  and it was one my greatest experiences in a movie theater this year. So, I hope Marvel’s big new plan is not to adapt Civil War page-by-page. We know they won’t.

Spoilers about the Age of Ultron film and the Civil War comic books ahead.

Marvel is looking the third Captain America movie as some kind of continuation to the events of Age of Ultron, is not really working as the traditional stand-alone film post Avengers like The Dark WorldIron Man 3 or The Winter Soldier. Captain America Let’s-pretend-it’s-called-Fallen-Son is The Avengers Age of Ultron 2.5, if you will. There’s a lot of destruction in Age of Ultron, and that will make an impact. Cap is not going to appear in Avengers 3. After the events of his third movie the MCU will be in a tough place that will keep going until Avengers 3. The heroes are defeated. Like I said, what happened after Let’s-pretend-it’s-called-Fallen-Son will affect the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At the end of Age of Ultron, Tony Stark is going to retire from the Avengers, he feels guilty about what happened. Ultron was his own project and brainchild, and Stark feels responsible of the destruction the robot caused. Captain America in the other hand, makes his own team of Avengers. They haven’t shot this scene, and it could change, but the new team will be formed by: War Machine, Scarlet Witch, Quicksilver, Black Widow, Falcon, and probably The Vision will be tossed there too.

The Russo brothers, directors of The Winter Soldier are Marvel’s favorites to take the mantle after Joss Whedon. I still believe that James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy will direct the fourth one now that it seems that Avengers 3 “splits” into two parts. Civil War is the perfect step forward in the established cinematic universe.

I don’t think they will be adapting Civil War just like it’s printed on page. Like I said earlier, Spider-Man belongs to Sony, but there’s the rumor that Marvel and Sony are in talks to bring Spidey to the team. Still, I don’t think it’s possible, or at least, I think they will have just the name of the character and they will recast. Why recast? The Amazing Spider-Man is not a beloved franchise like the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel’s movies are fresh in Rotten Tomatoes, and I know I spoke that the critic’s rating is not that important for your movie experience… but there’s a huge different between MCU and The Amazing Spider-Man. Marvel has to pick up the pieces of that franchise, Spidey lives in New York. The Avengers had the third act in New York. Ignoring what happened in Avengers, with that big alien invasion, in Marc Webb’s Spider-Man is not very smart. Pretending that Lizard-guy wanted to turn everyone into lizards sometime in New York, is dumb too.

Studios don’t have make-up sex this easy, Spider-Man joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe is probably not going to happen and he plays a substantial role in Civil War. But! Sony needs money, Marvel and these people can agree on something and we can get Spidey in the movie, but don’t get too excited.

Civil War is a great step foward, like I said before, not only for the cinematic universe but for comic book movies in general. If they follow most of the things that happens in the movie just to make a bit more faithful for the comic book readers, they can kill Captain America like in the comics. Fallen Son sounds like someone is going to die, just saying.

Another thing, to wrap things up, in the comic books, the heroes reveal their secret identity. There’s no secret identities in the Marvel Cinematic Universe so that should be changed for the movie.

Are we going to get Civil War? Marvel listen to their fans, believe or not. They read this stuff online to see your reaction. Maybe they are making this move because they heard it from the fans. I don’t think we are getting a complete adaptation of Civil War, but the fact that we are about to see one of the most famous storylines in the Marvel comic book in the big screen is very exciting.
